Colorado Jazz Workshop
Event on 2012-05-15 00:00:00
7pm :: Colorado Jazz Workshop ::

Since its beginning twenty three years ago, hundreds of local musicians have played with Colorado Jazz Workshop. Its purpose is to provide a place for the non-professional jazz musician to play. The Workshop has three big bands and five combos. All ensembles rehearse once a week with a highly qualified instructor from the jazz education community. These instructors are not only skilled educators but have extensive and impressive playing credentials. They have performed with jazz greats like Clark Terry, Bobby Shew, Louis Bellson, Maynard Ferguson, Dizzy Gillespie.

"The level of musicianship in the individual groups is pretty impressive. Most of these folks could have been professionals, " said Edd Nichols, founder of both the Workshop and Denver's Comedy Works. "But they still love jazz. They just have other day jobs – heavy equipment operators, lawyers, physicians, techies – but they are dedicated enough to get together every week and play."

Writing to Persuade: The Rhetoric of Clarity and Confidence
Event on 2012-06-26 08:00:00

Please join us for a focused, half-day seminar especially designed for litigators:

Writing to Persuade:
The Rhetoric of Clarity and Confidence

This program offers litigators a deeper understanding of what makes a piece of writing persuasive, and, more particularly, how to sway their most important audience: judges. We can teach these methods because we have learned them straight from the judges themselves during the many programs we do exclusively for them.

Writing to Persuade demonstrates how to write briefs that are clear, credible, and persuasive. It doesn't teach you "tips" or "tricks." Instead, it starts from the fundamental principles of rhetoric and psychology that show us how to think coherently about the techniques of persuasion. Building on those principles, the program gives you concrete, practical methods for writing and editing a brief so that its organization, style, and tone present your argument in the best possible light.

Colorado – Idaho Springs: First National Bank
Colorado Lawyer

The First National Bank, at 1542-1546 Miner Street, was constructed in 1880 on land owned by Henry Plummer, who served as the president of the bank. As the first bank in Idaho Springs, it was considered to have the most modern equipment and was furnished in a very elegant, Victorian style. The bank offered safety deposit boxes to its customers and had the only burglar-proof vault in Northern Colorado outside of Denver. Bank officers included notable community business leaders such as Dennis Faivre, George McClelland, J.J. Elliott, Thomas Cooper, William Doe and L. Hanchett.

In 1885, the west half of the building was constructed for Thero and Co., a company specializing in fresh and smoked meats and fish. First National Bank was not able to survive the Depression and the building was sold over the years and leased to a jewelry store, lawyers and accountants. In 1989, the building was purchased by Leo Bradley with the intent to restore it to its original purpose as a community bank. After a renovation, Clear Creek National Bank opened its doors in 1996. The vault is now lit at night and can be seen through the floor to ceiling windows, topped with double sets of Greek Revivial stone pediments, from the street. The original safety deposit boxes were located in a salvage yard and reinstalled in the vault.

The Idaho Springs Downtown Commercial District, roughly bound by Center Alley, 14th Avenue, Riverside Drive, and Idaho Street, has been the commercial center of the community since its development in the late 19th century. The Idaho Springs downtown area, with its collection of Late Victorian-Era structures, formed the core of a city where prospector George A. Jackson made the first placer gold discovery in Colorado. It went on to serve as an important milling and supply center for the mining region which accelerated the settlement of Colorado.
